Well. What to say about this.

The framing device is a set by a stand-up comedian named Dov G (Dovaleh Greenstein) in a small Israeli town. Think Lenny Bruce crossed with Baby Reindeer. He has invited a childhood friend that he hasn't seen in years to the set. There are no chapters, just the stand-up routine of what happened to him as a child and very young teenager, and the choice he thinks he made, interspersed with the thoughts and memories of the invited guest, who serves as the first person narrator. Dov performance is vaguely funny, cruel, nasty, and moving. Why is he telling this story? Is he looking for absolution? Is he looking to blame his childhood friends. I don't think so, but only Dov knows.

This story is disturbing in a peculiar way, but you can't look away.

And the audience for this stand-up performance who came for the comedy? Most end up leaving, but not all. Dov keeps track on a blackboard of everyone who left.

Would I have walked out of this performance if I had come for some easy laughs? I hope not, but something in me says that I would have if I could have gotten away with it.

A hard, although rewarding read.
